words that shape
I'm not a fan of most Christian magazines. Go figure, I write for them. Consider it a bad personal joke that's too difficult to explain.
That aside, I got a sample copy of Christianity Today's recent edition. One of the cover articles is The Top 50 Books that have Shaped Evangelicals. The list reveals a lot about evangelicals: their weaknesses for theology and intellectualness, their strength of missions, and democratic tendencies to read the same books as the next person in their Sunday School class. Most likely they are the same titles you read in high school - I found I have read a good percentage of the list. Consider some of the more interesting titles and authors:
#48 - The Hiding Place by Corrie Ten Boom with John and Elizabeth Sherrill (possibly my favoritest book while growing up)
#45 - The Scandal of the Evangelical Mind by Mark A. Noll (I was impressed this one actually made the list)
#43 - Operation World by Patrick Johnstone (Ok, who hasn't seen this one on their parent's bookshelves?)
#42 - The Purpose-Driven Life by Rick Warren (ahem, no comment will be given)
#41 - Born Again by Charles Colson
#39 - Desiring God by John Piper
#37 - God's Smuggler by Brother Andrew with John and Elizabeth Sherrill (another childhood favorite)
#36 - Left Behind by Tim LaHaye and Jerry Jenkins (again, no comment will be given)
#34 - This Present Darkness by Frank Peretti (another ex-favorite)
#32 - The Cross and the Switchblade by David Wilkerson with John and Elizabeth Sherrill
#27 - Christy by Catherine Marshall (dumb book, dumb TV series)
#16 - Basic Christianity by John Stott
#13 - Evidence that Demands a Verdict by Josh McDowell (who wasn't given a McDowell book for their high school graduation? I think I had three)
#9 - Through Gates of Splendor by Elisabeth Elliot (a good writer, I must say)
#6 - The Living Bible (frightening)
#5 - Knowing God by J.I. Packer
#4 - The God Who is There by Francis Schaeffer
#3 - Mere Christianity by C.S. Lewis (of course)
Would you add any others?
